Richard Hall Hall is a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for improving OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) and Sustainability in new multiuse (stainless steel) pharmaceutical manufacturing systems.
He has data from 41 sterile liquid and biologics facilities that show how poor cleanability of equipment results in very low production efficiencies, reduced facility capacities and enormous waste of the energy-intensive purified waters required for CIP (Clean in Place) cleaning.
Richard has conducted comparative riboflavin coverage / surrogate residue cleanability testing and leads the ASTM E55 Clean by Design draft standard (second ballot July 2025). The main review group of Clean by Design has 82 members – including SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) from all top-10 pharmaceutical companies and the FDA.
Richard has presented Clean by Design at ISPE/PDA/A3P/AFI/ASME BPE and other conferences in USA, Germany, France, UK, Spain and India and he is an active member of ASME BPE, ISPE and PDA.
He is also Chair of the ASTM E55.11 Process Design subcommittee and works in a Business Development role for a manufacturer of CIP-friendly aseptic valves.
